A guide to marketplace development

Cyprus marketplace - what's important to know

What is a marketplace and who is it suitable for?

A marketplace is a two-sided platform where one group of users (sellers, performers, property owners) offers goods/services/content, and the second (buyers, commissioners, renters) consumes them. The platform takes a commission on transactions (5-30%) or a subscription fee. Examples: Airbnb, Uber, Etsy, Booking.com, Bazaraki. A marketplace in Cyprus makes sense when there is an obvious matching pain (sellers and buyers cannot find each other through Google/Facebook), willingness to pay for a solution, and unit economics scale up to 1000+ transactions/month.

Types of marketplaces

  • B2C-product — Products: Etsy, Bazaraki. Payment: Stripe Connect, Sharetribe or custom Laravel
  • B2C-service — Services: Fiverr, TaskRabbit, ProFi. Chat, performer portfolio, reviews
  • P2P — Peer-to-peer rental/exchange: Airbnb, Vinted. More complex moderation, buyer protection needed
  • B2B — Alibaba, Faire, Ankorstore. Minimum orders, NET 30/60/90 payments, dealer prices
  • Vertical-marketplace — Niche focus: design (Behance), food (Yummly), legal (UpCounsel). Deep specialization beats generic platforms
  • On-demand — Uber, Bolt, Glovo. Real-time geo-matching, mobile-first
  • Auction — eBay, Catawiki. Complex bidding logic, escrow is mandatory

How much does a marketplace cost in Cyprus?

  • MVP on Sharetribe / no-code: €5-15k. Launch quickly, test hypothesis. Customization limitations
  • MVP on Laravel + Vue/Next.js: €10-25k. Flexible base for growth
  • Production version: €25-100k. KYC, chat, disputes, escrow, analytics, mobile-app
  • Enterprise / multi-vertical: €100-500k+. AI-matching, multi-currency, multi-region
  • 62px: €9990-49900. 62% discount for case study publication. Stack based on task

Stripe Connect - the payment standard

On bilateral platforms, payments need to be split between the seller and the platform (commission). Main models:

  • Express accounts — Stripe handles seller onboarding itself. Fastest startup. Stripe fee + 0.25% platform-wide markup. Optimal for most MVPs.
  • Custom accounts — Full control over UX. The platform collects KYC data itself and sends it to the Stripe API. More complex, but white-label.
  • Standard accounts — The seller has their own Stripe account, the platform connects. Cheaper but seller onboarding required.

In Cyprus, Stripe Connect works with EU legal entities and individuals through KYC. Alternatives: Adyen MarketPay, Mangopay, Hyperwallet. JCC and local banks do not handle split payments themselves.

KYC and AML for platforms

EU legislation (5AMLD, 6AMLD) requires platforms to verify sellers:

  • Basic KYC — passport, selfie, address. Do Sumsub, Onfido, Veriff, Jumio
  • Enhanced KYC — for high-risk sectors (financial services, legal). + sanctions, PEP, AML monitoring
  • UBO check — for B2B sellers. Identification of Ultimate Beneficial Owner
  • Continuous monitoring — periodic re-KYC, transaction monitoring

Standard setup: Sumsub onboarding flow + Stripe Connect KYC. €5-15k for integration, €1-3 per check.

Technology stack

  • Sharetribe Flex — managed marketplace SaaS from $79-299/mo. Suitable for MVP when you don't want to code. Limited UX customization
  • Custom on Laravel + Vue — our recommendation for serious projects. Full control, convenient admin, fast feature development
  • Next.js + Supabase — for product-team with average tech stack. Quick start, good SEO, real-time features
  • Ruby on Rails — Sharetribe is written on Rails itself, there are many ready-made gems available.
  • Custom on Node.js + Postgres — for JS stack teams
  • Microservices (Go/Python) — at the scaling stage, when the monolith hits performance limits

Search and filtering is a key UX task

On the marketplace, a user searches through thousands of ads. What's critical:

  • Elasticsearch / OpenSearch — standard for full-text search and facet filters
  • Ranking algorithms — Relevance + Seller Rating + Platform Fee. Custom logic
  • Geo-filtering — for local marketplaces (cars, real estate, services)
  • AI-suggest — autocomplete, "similar products", personalized recommendations
  • Saved searches + alerts — User saves filter, receives notification of new ads
  • SEO-friendly URLs — /apartments/limassol/2-bedroom instead of /search?cat=42&loc=15

Chat, ratings, disputes

Trust system - the main advantage vs direct contact:

  • In-platform chat — parties communicate within the platform (without losing commission). WebSocket, attachments, response templates
  • Bilateral ratings — after the transaction, both the seller and buyer leave a review. They are published simultaneously (anti-retaliation)
  • Verified badges — for KYC completion, a certain number of transactions, time on platform
  • Dispute resolution - Conflict moderation. Escrow + 14-30 day review period
  • Refund policies — specific rules, transparent to all parties
  • Trust & Safety team — moderators, sometimes AI filters for spam and fraud

Cyprus marketplaces - competitors and partners

  • Bazaraki — main classifieds. Not bidirectional (just a board), but in terms of traffic volume — No. 1
  • e-table.com.cy — booking restaurants
  • Foody Cyprus — food delivery
  • Wolt / Glovo — global on-demand in Cyprus
  • JCC ePay — Cypriot equiring (not a marketplace but mandatory integration)

Legal aspects in Cyprus

  • Company registration (CY resident) or EU legal entity - for accepting payments
  • VAT number and MOSS - for EU sales
  • GDPR - Privacy Policy, DPA with Stripe / Sumsub / other sub-processors
  • Terms of Service - separate for buyers, sellers, general
  • 5/6 AMLD compliance - KYC and transaction monitoring
  • Consumer protection - 14-day refund for EU buyers
  • Tax handling - VAT depending on buyer/seller's country, Net/Gross prices

Mobile app - do I need an MVP?

Depends on the industry:

  • On-demand (Uber-style) — essential from the first day. Does not work without mobile-app
  • P2P-rent (Airbnb-style) — Desired. 50%+ transactions through app
  • Good day, I am Aya, your multilingual AI assistant. — can start with PWA / responsive web. Native app later
  • B2B — desktop-first, mobile later

Development timelines

MVP on Sharetribe / no-code — 4-6 weeks. MVP on Laravel + Next.js — 8-12 weeks. Production version with KYC, chat, disputes — 16-24 weeks. Enterprise multi-vertical with AI — 6-12 months.
