PayPal Integration - What You Need to Know
What is PayPal and who is it for?
PayPal is a global payment service founded in 1998. Today, it has over 400 million active users across 200 countries. Its key advantages include brand recognition and Buyer Protection: PayPal customers know they are protected in case of issues, making them more willing to purchase on new sites. This is particularly valuable for startups and small stores with limited reputations.
When to choose PayPal in Cyprus
- UK/US audience — there PayPal is standard, many prefer it to cards
- A new business without a reputation — Buyer Protection PayPal offers +30-50% conversion boost compared to just Stripe
- High average order value — €500+. Buyers are willing to pay more if protected by PayPal
- Electronic goods — software, courses, digital downloads. Buyer Protection is critical for trust
- B2B invoices — easily create and send PayPal invoices; the client pays online
- Subscriptions with trial — PayPal Subscriptions is simpler than Stripe for straightforward scenarios
- Marketplaces with payments — Mass Payouts enable payments to dozens/hundreds of recipients
When it doesn't fit.
- EU-only business — Stripe and JCC are cheaper for EU cards
- Russian clients — PayPal left Russia in 2022, RU cards don't work
- Low average order value — High fixed commission (€0.35) makes PayPal unfavourable for micro-payments
- Complex scenarios needed — escrow, conditional charges, complex split — Stripe is more flexible
- High commission fee — 2.9% + €0.35 for EU is significantly higher than Stripe (1.5% + €0.25)
PayPal fees in Cyprus
- Domestic transactions2.9% + €0.35 for purchases up to €2500
- International transactions: 4.4% + €0.35 + currency conversion 4-5%
- Getting from an EU country: 1.9% + €0.35
- Refund: Refund commission - no (since 2019)
- Payouts: €0.25 per translation (Bulk Payments)
- Currency conversion: 3-4% above interbank rate
PayPal is significantly more expensive. Stripe and RevolutBut brand recognition and Buyer Protection make up for it for new businesses and UK/US audiences.
How to open a PayPal Business account in Cyprus
- Cyprus Limited Company with active status
- VAT number (if applicable)
- Cyprus bank account for payments
- Business description, website URL
- UBO and director passport
- Sometimes - bank statement for the last 3-6 months
Activation takes from 1 hour to 5 working days. For high-risk businesses (gambling, adult, crypto, MLM), PayPal often denies or requires additional documents.
Smart Buttons and Express Checkout
- Smart Buttons — PayPal buttons on product or cart page. Click → PayPal login pop-up → confirm → back to site. Works with PayPal account, cards, Pay Later
- Express Checkout — Client skips checkout form: sees "Buy with PayPal" button, authenticates, views summary, confirms. -50% checkout steps, +20-30% to conversion.
- Pay Later (Klarna-style) — built-in installment plan of 4 payments with no interest. Available in EU/US/UK
- Venmo — for US audience, mobile payments
Buyer Protection and Seller Protection
This is the main difference with PayPal:
- Buyer Protection — A client can dispute a payment within 180 days if they didn't receive the item or it wasn't as described. PayPal refunds the money to the client automatically.
- Seller Protection — the seller has protection from unauthorized payments and item not received chargebacks if the goods are shipped with tracking
For honest sellers, this is a plus: customers trust them. For controversial models (digital goods, services without tracking), it's a minus: chargebacks are common, funds are frozen for a month or two while disputes are resolved.
PayPal Subscriptions for SaaS
PayPal Subscriptions covers basic SaaS scenarios:
- Multiple plans with varying prices and frequencies
- Trial period (7, 14, 30 days)
- Setup fee (one-time charge at project start)
- Promotional pricing (first month discounted)
- Auto-renewal with notification
- Customer cancellation through PayPal account
Minus points compared to Stripe Subscriptions:
- No built-in Customer Portal — only through PayPal account
- No smart retry for failed payments
- No prorated pricing for upgrade/downgrade
- No add-ons or volume-based pricing
For simple SaaS, PayPal is suitable. For complex billing, Stripe is better.
Mass Payouts for marketplaces
PayPal Mass Payouts - pay hundreds of recipients in one click. Useful for:
- Marketplaces - payments to sellers after fulfillment
- Crowdfunding - returns for bakers
- Affiliate programs - payments to partners
- Reward programs - cashback, bonuses
- Salaries for freelancers worldwide
An alternative to Stripe Connect, but easier to set up and doesn't require onboarding recipients in PayPal (they may already have an account).
Webhooks and IPN (Instant Payment Notification)
PayPal supports two notification mechanisms:
- IPN (old) — for legacy integrations. POST requests to your endpoint on every event. Works but outdated
- Webhooks (modern) - REST API + JSON. HMAC signature, retry on failure, best support
Standard events: PAYMENT.SALE.COMPLETED, PAYMENT.SALE.REFUNDED, BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.CREATED, BILLING.SUBSCRIPTION.CANCELLED.
PayPal vs Stripe vs JCC vs Revolut
- PayPal — Brand recognition, Buyer Protection, high commission. For UK/US
- Stripe — best developer experience, low fees, powerful API. Standard for EU/US
- JCC — Cypriot equiring, low fees for local cards
- Revolut — lowest fees, multi-currency. But requires subscription
What we do often a bundleStripe + PayPal + JCC + Apple/Google Pay = coverage of all audience segments. Auto-routing selects the optimal for each payment.
Security and compliance
PayPal - PCI DSS Level 1, no cardholder data stored with you. PSD2/SCA implemented. GDPR compliant. Two-factor authentication for merchant account.
Integration timelines
Basic integration (Smart Buttons, single payment) — 3-5 working days. With Express Checkout and Subscriptions — 1-2 weeks. With Mass Payouts and custom logic — 2-3 weeks. Integration of PayPal + Stripe + JCC with auto-routing — 3-4 weeks.
